Process

Acting on inspiration, I develop ideas for art. Most of my concepts are humorous. I love dreaming up an original take on a subject, and then creating variations on a theme. The driving force for idea development derives from an odd gang of suspects: wackiness, irony, and metaphor. I like to play with scale and out-of-context imagery.

To make the art, I love to draw first -- pencil a rough idea quickly before it fades. Then, an ink and wash version -- as complex and detailed as I like -- towards a finished piece that can stand on its own.

I find some of these ideas and pictures make good material for painting. I then work toward simplification (stylization and/or abstraction) in my painting. Color becomes a key player. Having the basic idea comfortably in mind, with details in ink, I am now free to improvise in paint. The desired results aim toward looser interpretations of the more detailed predecessors.

In conclusion:
* Play with ideas in pencil
* Develop details in ink
* Use painting to play with color and simplification
